1 review of Szeklers Country

A fascinating region and people

The land of the Szeflers, which is known as Székelyföld in Hungarian, is bordered on the west by the Harghita mountains and hills, and to the east by the Carpathian Mountains. In between these places, there are meadows, many slopes, and the colder regions of Romania.

Two rivers, the Olt and Mures, provide the water needed by these cultures to survive. Some seven-hundred-thousand Szeklers live there, out of a total of one-point-seven million people belonging to this Hungarian minority living in Romania. They live in the region of Harghita, representing eighty-five percent of the population, and seventy-four percent in the region of Covasna.

Most are Catholic, Lutheran or Unitarian. The origin of this people is not well-known. They probably came, just as the Hungarians did, from Central Asia, at the time of Attila in the fifth century. The Szeklers say they are descendants of the Huns, and having been isolated in the Carpathians, they have preserved traditions and a language different from the Hungarians. In this place you can go from town to town, on foot or by car, and discover a completely different world from the rest of the country.
