Around Soufrière , the Sulphur Springs are one of the most famous and visited tourist attractions on the island. They have been declared a World Heritage Site [/ b] by UNESCO. It's a geothermal area, in the Qualibou volcano crater [/ b], which is still active. The impressive sulphur vapours (smells pretty bad) are constantly emanating. The guide explained that this occurs because the volcano is still active, and if these vapours weren't being released, the volcano would erupt. The petrified lava can be various colours produced by other deposits of various minerals, like copper, iron oxide, alkaline lead, calcium oxide, and carbon, giving it a somewhat lunar shade.
