Sueno's Stone

1 review of Sueno's Stone

Chink of the Picts

Excellent

Sueno's Stone is just outside Forres, Scotland, and is the cornerstone of the largest and best preserved of the Pictish period. Tests show this monument dates roughly from 600 AD. The stone is carved with panels on all sides, each of which represents an independent history to the others. The interpretation of them isn't clear, however the most relevant studies suggest that they may be battle memorials (like the Romans have on columns, like Trajan in Rome). Other theories suggest that this stone was the central body of an impressive Celtic cross, but this is unlikely as there are no breakage marks.

Today the stone has been secured at the base and has paneling with a stunning windows that prevent wear to the old stone elements and graffiti or vandalism. This monument could not be exempted from legend. This type of stone - a monument in the Pictish period stood at the crossroads. According to local legend, this is where the famous King Macbeth met three witches, who were imprisoned by the power of the stone, so if the stone broke it would release the witches and torment the people of Forres. To what extent did this legend inspired Master Shakespeare? Like all legends, the mystery is its charm.
