Refreshing spring in summer

The Su Gologone Spring, a natural monument, is found near the village of Oliena in Nuoro. It feeds the Cedrino River made famous by the Sardinian Nobel laureate Grazia Deledda in her work “Canne al Vento.”

The surface of the water shines in the sun and, thanks to the depth of the well, the pond has a deep, deep marine blue color. The water from the spring is drinkable, too, and you'll be surprised how cool and refreshing it is, even in summer.

Around the spring there's a park with lakes, eucalyptus groves, picnic areas, swing sets, a small church in honor of Nostra Signora della

Pietà, and a parking lot.

Extraordinary Location

Gologone is the largest karstic area in Sardinia and is located in the town of Oliena (Nuoro). In addition to the extraordinary location, you find yourself in front of a large (to say the least) limestone gorge. It was first explored by cavers up to around 107 deep, but still remains partially unexplored. Among other things, the undercurrents are very strong and dangerous for explorers. Near the spring, you can also visit Our Lady of Mercy, a charming small church built against the rock.

A wonder of nature

This spring is found in a crack in the mountain and the crystal-blue pool it creates is a treat for visitors. Supposedly, speleologists haven’t even been able to reach the bottom, no surprise given that hundreds of liters of water gush out of the spring every second. All we know is that it is around 135 meters deep! Anyways, it’s a beautiful place for a picnic with family or friends and a great place to enjoy the landscape and the sound of the trickling water.
