1 review of Las Cigüeñas Palace

Exposition of Military Orders

The Palace of Las Cigüeñas is a building located in the Plaza de San Mateo in the highest part of the historic district of Cáceres. Its name (“Palace of the Storks”) comes from the large number of storks that nest on it.

It was built in the 15th century by Diego de Ovando over the remains of an earlier Moorish Alcazaba. The façade is composed by a simple segmented archway above which there’s a window and the coats of arms of the Ovando-Mogollón. On either side on the ground floor, there are two Moorish-styled arched windows with pointed iron arches. In the interior, the courtyard is open and worth a visit.

But, what really stands out about the complex is the high tower with its battlements supported by small brackets. It’s currently the only tower in the historic district that’s still standing. It was renovated in the 1940’s to house the regional seat of the Military Government and remains in the possession of the Ministry of Defense to this day.
