3 obelisks adorn the Hippodrome
Little is known of the Stone Obelisk ending at the Hippodrome. Dating from the fourth century it's crowned with a bronze pineapple from the ninth century that fell during an earthquake. Constantine VII, in the tenth century, coated it in gilt bronze, but it was ripped in the Christian Crusade in the thirteenth century. It's curious to contemplate the three obelisks that adorn the Hippodrome, Egyptian, Hellenistic and unknown origin. This heterogeneity is a good metaphor for the eclectic and cosmopolitan spirit that has always been Istanbul.
