1 review of Stahl Peak Lookout

Big views

When the country in Montana was a bit wilder, men and women used to spend their summers perched in somewhat crazy mountain top cabins, searching the country side by day for smoke – the telltale signs of a forest fire. Many of those lookouts have since passed – either reclaimed by time or removed by the forest service when maintenance could no longer be afforded – but many also remain, and the lookout precariously perched atop Stahl Peak is one of the coolest. This lookout is accessible by a steep 4-mile trail; almost upon leaving your car you can see the lookout clearly – small and impossibly high.

The trail, however, is well graded and passes through interesting forest, which lessens the apparent severity of the climb. From the summit the peaks of Glacier National Park are visible to the east, and the Canadian Rockies roll away to the north. The real view, however, is not out but down – though more gentle on its south flank, Stahl drops away in a breathtaking leap in its north and east faces. The well-preserved lookout offers good shelter, and you will likely find a register and some surplus food.
