When the country in Montana was a bit wilder, men and women used to spend their summers perched in somewhat crazy mountain top cabins, searching the country side by day for smoke – the telltale signs of a forest fire. Many of those lookouts have since passed – either reclaimed by time or removed by the forest service when maintenance could no longer be afforded – but many also remain, and the lookout precariously perched atop Stahl Peak is one of the coolest. This lookout is accessible by a steep 4-mile trail; almost upon leaving your car you can see the lookout clearly – small and impossibly high.
