St. Peter's Collegiate Church
In the heart of the medieval city of Chauvigny is one of the most precious jewels of French Romanesque art, the Collegiate Church of Saint Pierre whose origins date back to the first third of the eleventh century. The actual construction of this harmonious and elegant building took place during the centuries XII-XIII. Outside, you can admire the delicacy of the bare stone covering the apse, whose lack of decoration gives a sense of elegance and solidity and the rounded domes that crown the chapels, giving way to the robustness of the mighty bell tower that crowns the building. But it is the interior of the collegiate where artists have bequeathed some wonderful gifts.
The height of the vaults and brightness prevailing inside the temple allow visitors to see and enjoy the scenes carved in stone by master Gofrius. They correspond with episodes from the life of the Virgin and Jesus with expressive images, grotesque monsters and animals. It will bowl over the art lover.
