Santa María, una de las mayores iglesias que tiene Écija, no iba a ser menos y presenta algunas de dudoso carácter adoctrinador; como la que cuenta que un domingo de Ramos, mientras el santo Ferrer oficiaba la misa una "judía" no prestaba atención a sus palabras, por lo que le cayó la puerta de la iglesia encima y el santo tuvo el poder de revivirla, y evidentemente ella se hace cristiana... O la del físicamente imposible milagro de San Pablo, que anudó los dedos de un joven para advertir sobre los pecados de los creyentes y que se desataron al pasar la mano por la cruz... Al margen de estas historias de muy dudosa certeza, lo que si que es real y está históricamente demostrado es que la iglesia hunde profundamente sus raíces en la historia. Tanto que sus orígenes datan de 1240, cuando Fernando III la funda, junto con otros templos de la reconquista. Tan arraigada tiene su responsabilidad histórica, que incluso debemos visitar el conjunto de obras arqueológicas de diferentes períodos y culturas (ibérico, romano....) que forman el museo parroquial situado en su claustro. Paseando por el interior de la iglesia, no dejamos de asombrarnos de la riqueza de los retablos barrocos y de la habilidad artística de los artesanos que los trabajaron. La imaginería tiene en esta iglesia suma importancia, ya que es salvaguarda de las imágenes de más devoción de la Semana Santa ecijana, como un Jesús Cautivo de gran expresividad y serenidad. Una Virgen del Rocío y un pequeño Jesús Predicador reciben también la adoración de los fieles. Antes de irnos, un vistazo a la impresionante fachada, con una portada en estilo barroco, diseñada por Figueroa y cobijada bajo un arco muy elevado, de un efecto sorprendente, motivando una de las entradas más originales del barroco andaluz del siglo XVIII, perfectamente adornada y ennoblecida con puertas de caoba y clavos de bronce. Para acabar, miremos arriba, a la torre, una casi gemela de la Giralda de Sevilla.

Esta bonita Iglesia, está situada en pleno centro de la ciudad, tanto histórico como financiero, en la plaza de Santa María, al lado de la Casa Consistorial. La iglesia forma parte del conjunto de monumentos que se ubican en torno a la Plaza de España. El edificio actual data del siglo XVIII y fue construido sobre un antiguo templo mudéjar de los siglos XVI y XVII. La portada principal es de estilo barroco y fue diseñada por Antonio Matías de Figueroa, siendo una de las entradas más originales del barroco andaluz del siglo XVIII. Posee puertas de caoba y clavos de bronce dando paso a un “cancel” entre mudéjar y barroco. Lo que quizás llame mas la atención es su torre que sufrió grandes destrozos por el terremoto de 1755 del que resultaron muy dañados el segundo y tercer cuerpo. Adosada a la gran portada, su diseño recuerda a la Giralda de Sevilla y posee un cuerpo de ladrillos con vanos decorados. En el cuerpo de campanas podemos observar una maravillosa ornamentación de azulejería del siglo XVIII. Los horarios de misas son:De Mayo a Septiembre, De lunes a sábado de 10.00 a 13.00 h. Es una Iglesia preciosa. Su torre es muy similar a la Giralda de Sevilla y en su plaza hay un monumento de la virgen del Valle (patrona de Écija). En su interior hay bastantes retablos cada uno con una imagen, entre ellos la de los 3 titulares de la Hermandad. También cuenta con un sagrario y un patio donde se encuentra el museo arqueológico.
