St. Magnus Cathedral (Orkney Islands - Stage 6a)

Excellent

This cathedral, which is known by the locals as "The Northern Light, was founded in 1137 by Earl Rognvald-Hali, who happened to be a descendant of Magnus. The Earl, who was also sanctified and the cathedral are the remains and hence the name. The cathedral has a Latin cross plan and offers its guests a unique fusion of architectural styles. We appreciate part of Romanesque style side, while the other could be defined as early Gothic. Due to its proximity to the sea the cathedral has undergone several renovations and rightly so. The largest was undertaken by King James III in 1486, and currently is in charge of a group of experts who constantly monitored to prevent damage.
