Iglesia sobre antigua mezquita árabe.
Como casi todas las Iglesias de los pueblos, está está ubicada en el centro del mismo, dominando con su enorme campanario el paisaje de Nigüelas.
La construcción de esta Iglesia data de los años 1550-1560, y se construyó donde anteriormente había una mezquita con baños, utilizada por los moriscos para hacer sus abluciones diarias antes de los rezos.
Recién terminada la Iglesia, cuando los mariscos le prendieron fuego, aunque no se quemó el cuerpo de la iglesia". Entre 1580 y 1582 Juan López de Paniagua rehizo las armaduras; la de la capilla mayor es ochavada de limas moamares. La armadura de la nave es también de limas dobles con seis tirantes pareados.
La torre ( a mi parecer muy desproporcionada en tamaño con el resto del conjunto arquitectónico) se levantó posteriormente y hubo de ser reparada o, al menos, rehacer el cuerpo de campanas en el año 1769.
También en el siglo XVIII se hizo el coro de madera y el retablo del altar mayor, en el que hay algunas buenas esculturas, entre ellas, un San Juan Bautista (de Risueño, semejante a los existentes en la catedral y en la Cartuja) y un San Juan Evangelista.
