3 reviews of Euphrasian Basilica

St Euphrasius

The Basilica is the largest church in Porec in Istria, northern Croatia. This episcopal complex includes the basilica, a sacristy, a baptistery and the bell tower of the palace. Built in Byzantine style it is very impressive and well preserved, and has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997. The first church in this place was dedicated to St Maurus, and was built in the fourth century. The mosaics from the chapel are still in the church garden. The fish, which is a symbol of Christ, is from this period. The current basilica was built in the sixth century during the time of Bishop Euphrasius, in place of the old basilica.

It is a church, built on a church, built on a church, and so in some places you can see the old remains, precious frescoes and mosaics. The bell tower is newer, from the sixteenth century, but inside is the baptistery, where the first Christians were baptized, very old. Entrance is free, but if you want to go up the bell-tower for a view of the city, you will have to pay.
