Saint Etienne Cathedral

Saint-Etienne ne possède pas une grande cathédrale gothique comme d'autres villes de France. A l'époque médiévale, la cité, relativement petite en ses remparts, concentrait sa foi en celle qu'on appelle "La Grand'Eglise". Dès 1825, il fut question de construire une nouvelle église dans le quartier de l'Hôtel de Ville. En attendant la réalisation, on aménagea une église provisoire. Du provisoire qui dura ... Ce n'est qu'en 1912 que débuta la construction de l'édifice actuel : Saint Charles. L'effondrement de la voûte de l'église "provisoire", dans la nuit du 8 au 9 janvier 1922, accélèra la réalisation de la nouvelle, devenue urgente. L'église actuelle n'a rien de proprement artistique qui fasse vibrer d'émotion un touriste : elle est bien proprette, et possède trois nefs bordées de chapelles latérales. L'élévation extérieure de la façade reproduit la distribution interne. Les trois travées correspondent aux trois nefs. L'ornementation de la façade, achevée en 1931, est minime. En 1970, à la création du diocèse, l'église Saint-Charles fut promue au rang de cathédrale.
