Srebrenica

1 review of Srebrenica

Explore the recent history of Europe

Srebrenica is a name of a book on XX century history. It means "silver city" as in Romans times silver was drawn from its mines, but instead everyone knows it as the city where a slaughter took place during the Balkan War (1992-1995). Explore the recent history of Europe through its streets, looking at the walls of the houses with holes of war is to look at history and hear its roar. A tour of the immediate vicinity of Srebrenica shows remnants of ammunition and it is like touching history. The adults have many things to say, some people tell war stories while offering hospitality with coffee, watermelon and cigarettes, these gestures mean that you are welcome in their house, there are also the silent ones and those who wish to forget.

Children play with that silent, emptiness of the past and with fear, with the sound of tanks and machine guns guarding the streets where they play. Srebrenica is a decadent place trying to survive its black history, it tries to overcome the memory of 8000 men and boys who went away. Orthodox Churches and the mosques coexist on top of the streets, hopefully they get it.
