Copper-domed architectural beauty at the capital of South Dakota
The capitol of South Dakota is located in the heart of the state, along highway 14. Definitely worth the stop into the town of Pierre to visit this copper-domed beauty with Corinthian columns. A Walk through the rose and flower garden that leads up to the capitol gives you a sense of walking up to something incredibly special. The grounds surrounding the building are lush and vibrant, with walking paths and space for outdoor enjoyment.
South Dakota is celebrating its 125th Anniversary of becoming a state this year (2014) in November so it's an especially interesting time to visit the capitol. When South Dakota became a state there were 3 elections in which the location of the state's capital was put to a vote. Pierre won each of the elections and the original cornerstone for the building was laid in 1908.
