South Bass Island Lighthouse

1 review of South Bass Island Lighthouse

The shining light of the island!

South Bass Island Lighthouse is at the far southern tip of Put-in-Bay on South Bass Island in Ohio. The easiest way to reach the lighthouse is by foot, bicycle, or golf cart. You could drive to it as well, but many people don't bring their vehicles to Put-in-Bay as there isn't much room for parking. Walking around the exterior of the lighthouse is quite lovely as you get a gorgeous view of the lake and a rocky beach. Lighthouse lovers will be attracted to this building, as you can take tours here occasionally and climb the 42 steps to the top. Ohio State University now owns the lighthouse, except for the original lens that is on display at the Lake Erie Island Historical Museum.

The lighthouse has not been operational since 1962, but it still remains a beautiful building that has been virtually unaltered since it was built back in 1895. In 1990, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
