Thrilling, overwhelming, chaotic, and beautiful

There is nowhere on Earth like the souks of Marrakech. I'd been to the souks of Egypt and Turkey before, but those of Marrakech took it to a whole other level. They're basically a small city in their own right! The souks are actually a small neighborhood of the Marrakech Medina which, realistically, seems like one massive souk itself.

The souks are divided into several sections, each with a specialty: wood-working, clothes, lamps, metal-works, jewelry, leather-goods, spices, etc. You'll hear people on the street telling you about a "special Berber market" but don't buy that. It's a ruse. Just keep exploring and you'll find some amazing things. I'd especially suggest the back alleys of the leather and metal-working souks where you can see the workshops and the people going about their daily lives.


Oh, and don't forget to haggle!!! My advice is that if they make you a good offer, accept it. Many people prefer to keep looking and you'll come back and the vendor's very cheap offer will have magically disappeared and you have to start all over again. Think about what you'd pay for it in the US or Europe and divide it by 3, that's about what you should be paying.

A fascinating experience

I think what I like about Marrakech is delving into the madness, the noise, the color, the smell depending on what is passing by-of leather, spices, herbs, mint, to soaps, jasmine, honey, a sweet, cinnamon. It is a feast for the senses. You can find everything: carpets, leather bean bags, suitcases, bags, slippers, silver, spices, herbs, ceramics, and everything you could imagine. Souk in Arabic means disorder, but in the great disorder is an order, and each souk corresponds to a craft bazaar at the tanners, the silversmith, to the weavers, the potters of the spices, the seller of nuts, suddenly you're walking and you only see dates and apricots.

You turn the corner and everything will be full of candy, suddenly the "peculiar" odor of skin, and then you get far enough away to stop smelling it. In fact I bought some leather bracelets and smelled them and it seemed to me that they did not smell. When we got home, and I put them on, I could not stand the smell. But there, mixed together, you block it out. I never get tired of walking, of looking, of haggling, of smelling, of trying things out ... No one who goes to Marrakech ever stops visiting the souks, that's why recommending going is silly, but I wanted to tell you my vision.

Don't be in a hurry to enjoy the spectacle of the Souk in the Medina, and be sure to see the souk of dyers and their perpetually festive environment, and that of the smiths-who show of their magnificent works of bronze and copper-those of slippers, jewelers, woodworkers. In the square Rhaba Kedima you will find the market of Berber carpets and kilim. Marrakech is a terrible temptation for every lover of crafts and art buying. You can find: tapestries, ceramics, bronze and copper, jewelry, leather ... Also potions and potions. To buy carpets, Chez Abdelmalik - in Rahba Kedima-is the best place. It boasts an Ali Baba environment and an international shipping service that is perfectly organized.

Certainly as Paulinette says above that now the streets of the souk activities aren't as categorically limited as they once were, but there are still streets that have a predominance of one craftsman type or another. In the souk there is still a sophisticated tradition of haggling. But if you have patience and time, go to the Craft Centre or Gueliz stores, the European part of the city with European prices ...

Endless roads of markets. If you see something you like don’t stop and start looking at it, they smell you’re desire of buying it.

You’ll need to be a quick dribbler to leave the market with your wallet full, have fun!
