Souks of Marrakech

There is nowhere on Earth like the souks of Marrakech. I'd been to the souks of Egypt and Turkey before, but those of Marrakech took it to a whole other level. They're basically a small city in their own right! The souks are actually a small neighborhood of the Marrakech Medina which, realistically, seems like one massive souk itself.

The souks are divided into several sections, each with a specialty: wood-working, clothes, lamps, metal-works, jewelry, leather-goods, spices, etc. You'll hear people on the street telling you about a "special Berber market" but don't buy that. It's a ruse. Just keep exploring and you'll find some amazing things. I'd especially suggest the back alleys of the leather and metal-working souks where you can see the workshops and the people going about their daily lives.

I think what I like about Marrakech is delving into the madness, the noise, the color, the smell depending on what is passing by-of leather, spices, herbs, mint, to soaps, jasmine, honey, a sweet, cinnamon. It is a feast for the senses. You can find everything: carpets, leather bean bags, suitcases, bags, slippers, silver, spices, herbs, ceramics, and everything you could imagine. Souk in Arabic means disorder, but in the great disorder is an order, and each souk corresponds to a craft bazaar at the tanners, the silversmith, to the weavers, the potters of the spices, the seller of nuts, suddenly you're walking and you only see dates and apricots.

Don't be in a hurry to enjoy the spectacle of the Souk in the Medina, and be sure to see the souk of dyers and their perpetually festive environment, and that of the smiths-who show of their magnificent works of bronze and copper-those of slippers, jewelers, woodworkers. In the square Rhaba Kedima you will find the market of Berber carpets and kilim. Marrakech is a terrible temptation for every lover of crafts and art buying.
