Seville Cathedral

Perhaps the fact that being half from there and having family there, my objectivity may be impaired, but along with those of Toledo and Granada (cathedrals I've seen), that of Seville is one of the most impressive and beautiful in Spain.

Since before Easter it has been undergoing an exterior remodelling process recovering the authentic background colour of its stone, whilst its interior pillars remain in process of repair.

For those who do not know or have not seen, besides the cathedral itself, the price one pays to see the treasure that lies at the side and the to climb La Giralda, I sincerely recommend, although you must be patient, as there are 36 flights of ramps (by the way, do not wear shoes that slide).

The cathedral of Seville is one of the largest in all Christendom. Construction began in 1401 on the old Seville mosque of which still remains the principle minaret, none other than the well-known Giralda.

Of multiple architectural styles, emphasized in particular are those of Gothic and Baroque. On its construction it is told that a famous phrase was coined, "We’ll make a Church that those who see us working on, take us for crazy," which says a lot about the grandeur of the building.

Personally, it will never cease to amaze me, no matter how many times I pass by it.

The best way to describe the cathedral of Seville is to read Luis Cernuda:

"Go to the cathedral at sunset, when the great harmonious nave, deep and resonant, falls asleep stretched out arms crosswise. Between the main altar and the choir, a red velvet carpet and silence absorbs the murmur of footsteps. Everything immersed in penumbra, although the light, penetrating even through the stained glass windows, stops there at the height of the crafty halo. Falling from the roof like a waterfall, the grand retable was just a blur of gold lost in shadow. And behind the grilles, from a lienza (narrow strip of cloth) dark like a dream, emerged in some white chapel energetic and static forms.

The impressive cathedral of Seville catches our eye from afar. Its vastness makes us feel small whenever we walk near it.

But what always surprises me is looking at it from below discovering the details, those wonderful images that seem to levitate on its walls, the impressive Giraldillo...
