Modern Architecture in a calming environment
The Central Library of Seattle is well worth spending a few hours to explore. Styled in a contemporary architecture that was designed primarily by Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas and former Seattleite Joshua Ramus. The best way to see the inside of the library is to start at the top level and work your way down. Move slowly and appreciate all the different angles, nooks and crannies and placement of the books.
The way the light shines in through many of the open spaces is breathtaking. There is some fantastic use of color, while at the same time being a quiet environment that is perfect for studying or browsing. If you need an escape during a hectic travel schedule, this is the place to go.
Some interesting stats about the library is that there are almost 1 million shelves devoted to books, 400 computers for public use (looking for a place to check your email? You've found it!), and underground parking that holds 143 cars.
Open most days from 10 am until 8 pm (Friday, Saturday and Sunday until 6 pm)
