New parliament opened in 2004
After decades of requests for Scotland to have political self-determination, in 1997 there was a referendum on the creation of a Scottish parliament (with powers transferred from London). The people voted "yes" and this place in Holyrood was chosen to build the new parliament. In 1998 an international competition was held to select the architect, Enric Miralles won and in 2004 the new parliament opened.
