Savonnières Caves
A little hidden gem for those who visit Tours and the Loire castles. The caves of Savonnières ("grottes" in French) are located about 10km from Tours, on the banks of the Cher River. They are the result of a slow natural evolution since prehistoric times and were used by the Romans. There are actually two caves: the first has been known since the sixteenth century or so, and the second was found in 1947. The walk takes just over an hour, guided by underground landscapes and impressive water features. Over the centuries, stalagtitas and stalagmites have formed over limestone, which glow under the electric light that illuminates the hallways.
You can also enjoy indoor water pools, reconstructions of the original animals who lived there for thousands of years, local handicrafts etc. The ride is not dangerous and is suitable for children. But you have to think about wearing a cardigan as it is so cool. It seems to be a good choice for anyone in the area who is a bit tired of seeing so many castles! In the summer, have a picnic on the banks of the river!
