Built on a Romanesque church, the church of Saschiz is a fortified church. Its construction began in 1493, when the city, then inhabited by German Saxons, began to be an important place and no longer a country town. Some preserved documents show that the province of Sibiu financially helped to build the church between 1503 and 1507. A little later, the town received the Pope's blessing, and then held an independent position compared with the region's other churches, which had to accommodate military troops on their way to battle and give them food, sometimes for weeks. However, Saschiz did not have to do so.
