This river was once an important...

This river was once an important channel / mode of transport to get from the Central Valley to the Caribbean. The Sarapiqui River is a river well known in Costa Rica. It is 85 kilometers long, and it begins at the same old crater lake of the Poás Volcano. From there, it starts a steep decline to the mouth of the San Juan River, and in Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui.

It's a pretty strong river, surrounded by lush vegetation, especially in the area that runs roughly parallel to the Pan American Highway, in its last few miles before turning its waters in Puerto Viejo. In fact, in areas where it is possible, it is worth going to the river to see its force firsthand of which the water falls and enjoy all the extensive vegetation and green tones accompanying unimaginable river. It is a feeling of being surrounded by a nature, an area full of life and color.

Especially in this last part, it is considered a very suitable river for rafting, with sections for all levels and experience, but they say it is good river for beginners. Throughout the Panamericana, there are various agencies just down the road who offer their services to take you rafting on the Sarapiqui River and they always have experienced guides on these expeditions. My fellow travel companions took a rafting trip down a stretch of several kilometers and mentioned that they loved it. The river should have 2-3 small 'jumps' areas, several areas of rapids, others that are more calm, and then they let them jump into the river from a bridge. In general, they mentioned that the descent was really fun.
