Stunning wilderness
Our 3rd day on the trek to Machu Picchu was to make the trek from Santa Teresa to Aguas Calientes. This route is quite touristy for a specific reason, because there are only two ways to get to Aguas Calientes, either on a train that's expensive or by trekking. It's a path that runs along the train tracks but it's very simple and nice, because tit overlooks beautiful landscapes and finally, you begin to see the mountains surrounding Machu Picchu and even the wonderful Inca ruins. In total it takes about 6 hours but you can do only half and rent a van for the next leg. This allows you to save time and get to Aguas Calientes by noon to debate the mountain across from Machu Picchu, the Putucusi.
We made this choice and I recommend it, but yes, you have to be fit because they walk a lot and Putucusi is easy but very steep. During this journey there are many stalls where you can buy food and drink, because as locals are trying to get some extra money. The most beautiful part of the route is when you start to get to Aguas Calientes and you begin to contemplate a stunning wilderness and some mountains that attract attention for its greenery and its height.
