Legend has it that Ines de Bobadilla spent her days at the top of this tower, waiting for her beloved Hernando de Soto, the island's first governor. She didn't know that after having discovered Florida, the Mississippi River, and the beginning of the Appalachians, her lover had gotten a bad fever which had snatched his life from him while looking for the fountain of youth. Evening after evening, Dona Ines peered furiously at the waves breaking on the Malecon. They say she died of heartbreak. It was the next governor of the island, Juan Bitrian, who later commissioned her statue to be placed in the watchtower.
