Construction began in 1649
Construction of the monastery began in 1649 and it replaced the Monastery of Santa Clara a Velha, since the Mondego river ruined it. The Baroque building is sober, utilitarian and flanked by towers. The church has on display on the main altar a silver and crystal urn (XVII century) with the body of Queen Santa Isabel. The original stone tomb of the patron saint of the city was built by master Pero in 1330 and is in the lower church choir. The cloister, 1733, is the work of Carlos Mardel. Winter: Monday-Saturday 8:45-18:45. Sundays and holidays from 9-18:45 Summer: Monday-Saturday 8:30-19. Sundays and holidays 9-19.
