San Vicente Pacaya
San Vicente Pacaya is a village which is set in the foothills of the Pacaya volcano. It's a little tricky to get to from Antigua Guatemala because you have to go through the capital and then reach the road that leads down to the Pacific in order to get to Escuintla and then San Vicente. As a result, you can find many travel agencies offering direct private transfer to San Vicente. It's a little more expensive but it often includes a guide for half a day to go hiking with and who will show you the local area. San Vicente is known for its beautiful natural landscape, such as El Ojo de Agua springs, Las Pilas and the hot lagoon.
But the biggest attraction is the San Vicente Pacaya Volcano, an active volcano that you can climb up and get very close to the lava. The ascent starts at San Vicente where you pay an entrance fee, I think 20 Quetzales and it takes around two hours to climb up to the top. The sights are spectacular. If you request it in advance, you can get a camping permit so that you can camp and see the eruptions at night.
