4 reviews of St Nicolas Cathedral

The most important thing in Sassari

San Nicolas Cathedral is the largest church to be found in the city of Sassari. It was constructed in the 12th Century, and it was the only one until the 13th Century, when they began to build another in the city. It was originally built in a Romanesque style, and it was renovated in a Catalan Gothic style between the years of 1435 and 1518, when it was elevated to the rank of Cathedral. Part of the cathedral was demolished in the 17th Century because of stability and in the seventeenth and eighteenth the current façade was built in a Baroque style. The bell tower is all that remains of the old Romanesque church.

The most striking thing about it is its main facade, which is divided into three levels. The first gallery of three arches that give access to the church and on the second you can see three richly ornamented niches where three Saints martyrs and the third San Nicolas and the God Father crowning the facade. When we went, it was closed, but just to see it the outside, it is worth it, it is beautiful!

Beautiful sculptures

The cathedral (duomo) of Sassari is really worth seeing. It’s located in the old town, not far from the Ducal Palace, and you can get there on foot. The baroque facade has beautiful sculptures and you can really notice the Iberian influence in the Spanish-style Plateresque sculptures. At the top, there’s a statue of the patron saint Nicola. There’s only one word for this cathedral: beautiful! The interior is spacious and bright and the marble altarpiece is in the high-Baroque style.
