San Martín Square

The main square, as it was called in the nineteenth century, has its origin in a square pasture surrounded by trees and native plants and where dairy cows grazed peacefully. There was also a bucket pit which supplied them with drinking water. Here, Independence was first sworn and the National Anthem was sung on May 25, 1822. The streets had no name until 1876. The first building to be built in front of the square was a boys' school in 1849. It´s currently the Social Club and its Parish Church "Our Lady of Aranzazu". In 1873 the first remodeling of the plaza began. Native trees were uprooted and red tiled streets and avenues were constructed.
