Beautiful and prosperous town
Cuevas de San Marcos belongs to the region of Antequera and is an interesting town to visit, both for its scenery (nestled on a small hill that goes down to the valley of the river Genil) and its proximity to Malaga and Cordoba. It has constancy of existence since Roman times, as Ptolemy in his Geography talks about Belda village in the year 298. During the Roman domination Belda was the wealthiest city in Andalusia, later with the Arab domination two cities grew in importance in the Madinas de Archidona region, Belda and the current Cuevas de San Marcos. In 1801 residents of Cuevas Altas requested King Charles IV independence from the municipality of Antequera, which they got after a 6-year lawsuit, but just granting it the title Villazgo.
