San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane

Es una de las obras clave del barroco italiano, obra de Borromini, fue erigida a mediados del siglo XVII, la mayor singularidad que tiene esta iglesia son las curvas que aparecen en la fachada y en su interior. La nave central aparece adelantada y el friso y la cornisa remarcan más aún la ondulación. Está dedicada a San Carlos Borromeo, pero por sus reducidas dimensiones también es conocida como S. Carlino. Su interior presenta grandes columnas agrupadas de cuatro en cuatro con nichos y molduras continuas en los muros, que parecen reducir más aún el espacio. La cúpula muestra una gran decoración que quiere simular un artesonado clásico con motivos octogonales, hexagonales y en forma de cruz, que van disminuyendo a medida que confluyen en la linterna, pero es de escayola.

La iglesia de San Carlo es una de las que mejor exponen en toda Roma el desarrollo total del Barroco. Fue encargada en 1634 a Borromini. El enclave del terreno para construirla era muy dificultoso -ya que se trataba de una de las esquinas de la Piazza de las Quattro Fontane-, muy irregular. Para solventar este problema, Borromini ingenió un buen plan arquitectónico: realizar un edificio que cabría, como él dijo "en un pilar de la Basílica de San Pedro". Pero sin descuidar el carácter monumental ¿Cómo hacerlo? Mediante un juego genial de líneas cóncavas y convexas. Así se logra una sensación de armonía y de tamaño mucho mayor de la que el espacio parecía permitir. En el interior de la iglesia veremos una de las cúpulas de Roma más livianas y con más luz. Su forma se parece a la de una colmena pero al mismo tiempo parece moverse... En definitiva es también un lugar donde detenerse si uno se acerca a la mágica y pequeña plaza de las Cuatro Fuentes.
