A timeless classic
San Calisto, warmly referred to as “Sanca” among Romans, is a bar located steps from the Piazza di Santa Maria which opens at dawn and shuts its doors at 2am every day of the week except Sunday. Despite the Trastevere neighborhood’s recent transformation into one of the city’s hippest areas, San Calisto has maintained its involuntarily-retro vibe and looks right out of 1960’s Rome: worn photos of footballers on the walls, an honest pricing scheme, and quick waiters ve shout commands in Roman. It’s not just a bar though; it also serves homemade ice cream. I love the chocolate ice cream there…it tastes like when I was a kid.
