Saint Jonh's Loggia and Temple

Costruita nel 1533 su disegno dell’architetto lombardo Bernardino da Morcote, la Loggia di San Giovanni, con annesso Tempietto, non fu di semplice realizzazione: doveva riuscire a chiudere in qualche modo piazza Libertà sul lato della salita verso il colle del Castello e, allo stesso tempo, doveva inserirsi nella già esistente Torre dell'Orologio. L'insieme però risulta molto armonioso e si dice che fu apprezzato da Andrea Palladio. In epoca austriaca, poi il tempietto, la loggia e i locali annessi furono usati come corpo di guardia. Attualmente il tempietto è diventato il Pantheon dei Caduti e, insieme alla Loggia, ha subito numerose opere di restauro che lo ha riportato all'antico splendore.

Built in 1533 by the architect Lombard Bernardino Morcote, the Lodge of St. John, with an adjoining temple, it was not easy to make: should be able to close somewhat Freedom Square on the side of the hill to the Castle Hill and at the same time, he had to fit into the existing Clock Tower. The set, however, is very smooth and it is said that it was appreciated by Andrea Palladio. In the Austrian period, then the temple, the lodge and outbuildings were used as guard. Currently, the temple has become the Pantheon of the Fallen and, together with the Loggia, has undergone several restoration that brought it back to its former glory.
