Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument

2 reviews of Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument

A historical monument

Excellent

This large circular monument located on Riverside Drive at 89th Street in New York City commemorates the Union Army soldiers and sailors who served in the Civil War. It was designed by Charles and Arthur Stoughton, who won a contest with their ancient Greek design. The monument is based on an Athenian monument, and is made of marble with a pyramid-shaped roof, and 12 Corinthian columns. It was commissioned by the State of New York, and dedicated on Memorial Day in 1902. On the pillars are a list of the regiments of volunteers from New York who served in battle, the Union generals, and the battles in which they led troops.
