Immense area
Once you get into Petra, you have many options. Many people have the mistaken perception that Petra is just the front of the ancient Treasury, but there is much more inside. I'd suggest setting aside several days to cover all the immense area. One of the most common routes is to go through the Roman ruins to the Monastery. On the road right next to the Roman Theatre, you'll find the Royal Tombs. The vast red walls are dotted with windows, and house ancestral graves. If the weather is nice, I'd suggest going in the evening to watch the buildings in the changing light.
