Castles with a lot of history

This is one of the most important historical monuments in the province of Alicante, since a large part of the towns grew around forts and castles which controlled and protected strategic roads during times of war.

The province is home to over 100 castles and fortes. Three of the most important are in the Vinalopó area (Villena, Sax, Elda, Novelda, Petrer Banyeres, Castalla, Onil, Biar). The Castle of Villena, also known as the Castle of Atalaya, was built on Mt. San Cristóbal by the Moors in the 12th century.

Jaime I took the castle during the Reconquista in 1240 and gave it to the Alfonso X, King of Castile. Three years later, the Almizra Treaty took place, and once again it became part of the Kingdom on Aragon, creating the Villena nobility. Although it did pass back into the hands of the Castilians, it became a permanent part of Alicante in 1836. It was bombed during the war, and was restored during the 20th century. In 1931, it was recognized as a National Monument.

Nearby, you can also find the stone castle of Sax, another important strategic point during the Moorish era. According to scholars, the base dates back to the 14th century and possibly was built upon a pre-existing Alcazár from the Moorish era. The oldest part is that found in the north end, and the more modern part is around the Homenaje Tower. It forms a part of Spain’s historical legacy.

Finally, we have the Castle of Biar. Of Moorish origin, it was built on a hill and a town of the same name sprung up around it. Throughout history, it served as an important border castle.

In the northeast of the Elda Valley, you can also find the Castle of Petrer, which dates back to the 12th and 13th centuries. It was originally built as a defensive structure by Christian troops but was eventually converted into a residential structure. It suffered damages when stones from its walls were used in the construction of houses, but it is in excellent condition today thanks to restoration efforts. In 1986, it was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument of National Interest and houses a museum which holds various exhibits.
