Río Dulce to El Petén

Village people are more trusting

To be on bike on Guatemalan roads, you have to be pretty motivated. 100km a day to Cancun and Merida in the Yucatan Mexican. From Rio Dulce, Guatemala center, there aren't many options, you've got a single road or a dirt track. My bike has two rear panniers for storage, the tent is on the back to camp in the fields. Camping is not dangerous, people laugh when I ask if I can stay in your field, but sometimes there are nasty insects. I buy food every day, usually ready, and I have always a lot of water, and a small stock of food, if the distances between towns are further which is what happends after Poptún (amazing hostel, Ixobel farm with horses and many activities, one of the best hostels in Guatemala), the road climbs again, zig zigzags, there are less people, it's hotter, it hurts, the trucks go slower when they pass and they offer to put the bike back with the cows and take me to the next town, but I didn't give up! There are enough rivers to cool off, and people invited me to sleep over at their houses rather than camp in their garden.
