In the heart of the Atlantic Ocean, this western island group of the Azores, unknown to many people, can be found with its lush vegetation and its many waterfalls and lakes scattered throughout the island. The island is just over 140 square kilometers big and its capital is Santa Cruz das Flores, a small but charming village of approximately 1300 inhabitants. Life here is calm and tranquil. Santa Cruz is the ideal spot to stay as it has several hotels, shops and restaurants and from there one can travel around the island. The best time to visit is during spring and summer when the fields and hillsides are full of flowers, from there its name Flores Island.
