A taste of the bayou in Madrid
Gumbo is a creole-themed restaurant with an upscale touch in the heart of Madrid's alternative Malasaña neighborhood. It hasn't been open long, but the fact that it's usually fully-booked for dinner (that's a hint to make reservations!) is a testament to the tasty food.
They have a selection of American beers and have New Orleans jazz on the speakers. The menu has plenty of southern classics like gumbo, fried green tomatoes, wings, etouffee, and the like, but also some more French-inspired dishes using the best of southern ingredients. They also have a "market fresh" menu highlighting fresh seasonal ingredients from the market.
We ordered some tasty fried green tomatoes smothered in a savory Bearnaise sauce (wonderful), a strip steak with garlic mashed potatoes, and a sweet potato and sweetbreads dish off the market menu. Everything was absolutely delicious and even made this southern boy a tad bit homesick. You have to go!
