The natural history museum of Avignon was installed in 1940 in the residence of Soissan Raphaelis, an old manor house that now only retains an old facade. Esprit Requiem, a great Mecena of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries is regarded as the founder of the Calvet Avignon museum. He was a great botanist and paleontologist, whose collections remain the basis of the museum. Today it is highly recognized for its scientific interest, the permanent galleries represent geology, evolution of life and wildlife. Besides seasonal exhibitions there's a library with over 18,000 books.
