Region of Totonicapán

The region or Totonicapán is the highest area in the country of Guatemala. An area little known by tourists, it has remained largely very traditional. The large market of San Francisco el Alto for example is one of the most beautiful in Guatemala. Totonicapan is a small town, 200 kilometers away from the capital. The population of the region is very traditional, respecting Mayan rituals and wearing in traditional dress. Totonicapan is an important city because it is located near the border with Mexico. It has a beautiful church with a convent, a theater and a small museum of pre-Columbian art. In the region, you can go hiking, though it's best to go with a guide because the trails are not clearly marked and they range all over the countryside.

Once, the guide wanted to go a certain way and we ended up walking much further, to villages where there was little food because they were not prepared to receive visitors, a disaster. The saint of Totonicapan is San Miguel Archangel and, during the last week of September, the town celebrates the festivities of Totonicapán Marimbas, with wonderful traditional dances and singing. The market day is a Saturday, but if you come on a Friday you can visit the fantastic San Francisco el Alto. I recommend a visit to this place.
