Weigh house

Alkmaar is the cheese city. In 939 its abbey was built in the city. In 1254 Count Floris V granted the city its name. It owes its growth and importance as a canal crossroads and therefore these produced tolls from the transhipment of goods. It is a Renaissance building. Designed by Jan Stuyt. Built between 1509 and 1520. In 1573 the Spanish attacked, but they were saved by the strong walls, and the use of boiling tar and burning branches thrown from the walls. From the year 1600 the city developed its own sailing fleet and a centralized market.
