Both eerie and beautiful
Once a year, at the beginning of fall between August and October, the chiefs, warriors, and priests lead the entire island to the peak of Rano-Kao, the Oronogo ceremonial grounds, to celebrate Tangata-Manu (self-affirmation) and the god Make-Make (Easter Island's principal deity).
This, however, happened many years ago. Today, the island lives on tourism, agriculture, and fishing. Aside from the famous statues, the "moais," and the Anakena beach, Easter Island has a noble culture and some of the world's most well-preserved natural areas. This is the case of the Rano Kao volcano near Hanga Roa, the island's only settlement.
