History and pride of a people
The port of Whitehaven means everything to this town, from its foundation to its maximum splendor in the Georgian era. This port was the third largest in the country, beating much more populated cities like Edinburgh and Newcastle. It is the most colorful and cared for and throughout the city there is a curious mix of modern and old. In full operation, it is full of all types of vessels, mostly of recreational fishing. At first the current port was divided into two parts, keeping its original structure, the west, in theory is for fishing vessels and the east for recreation. But now they are all mixed.
In its most advanced area towards the sea the lights signal its entrance, you can see that there are double structures explained by force the sea on the west coast of England, far more abrupt than on the opposite coast. In the vicinity of the port there are enough places of historical relevance, such as the museum (an old converted lighthouse) and the defense bastion, plus of course, a beautiful walk leading to the waterfront, one of the most vibrant areas of the social people. Clearly, at other times this port had commercial relevance from mining and the industrial prosperity of the area, but the disappearance of these activities means that it has lost some poise. View it with respect to the times it lives in, it has become not only a historical corner but is a social hub. The lives of its people are strongly linked to the development of this port, one of the best in the North of England.
