As I've already said when talking about the center of the town, Dumfries is literally split in two by the River Nith, and each bridge that crosses the river has its own particular history. In this case, the Buccleuch Street Bridge represents the modernization of the center after the increase in traffic brought about by the Industrial Revolution, back in the nineteenth century. The nearby bridges were too small to cope with heavy transport, so to avoid vehicles having to make long detours, this bridge was built.
