Propilaia

Propilaia is the name of the majestic entrance to the Acropolis. The construction of this massive work began in 437 BC. Although the Peloponnesian War of 432 BC delayed its completion, its architect is still admired for creating a building admired throughout the ancient world. The Propilaia consists of a central rectangular building divided by a wall into two frames. These two frames are underpinned by five gates, rows of Ionic and Doric columns and a lobby with a ceiling painted blue with gold stars. The northern part hosted the Pinakothiki and an art gallery. Throughout its busy history (it served as the residence of an archbishop, a Frankish palace and a Turkish fortress and weapons store), some parts of the building have been accidentally destroyed.

Such was the misfortune suffered in 1645 whenTurkish powder magazine exploded in it. Being the only entrance around the Acropolis is a place where there are always people. If you want a picture of the Propilaia as leaves on postcards, it's best to be in the early morning. At that time normally only groups ranging views as blocks of a monument to another. You just need a little patience and seize those moments.
