A beautiful abbey

Excellent

Tucked away along a bend in the river Coquet, we can find this beautiful renovated abbey, its church still in use. The neo-gothic priory was founded in the twelfth century, and managed to survive the wrath of Henry VIII during the Protestant Reformation, possibly due to its isolated location. Roof restorations were carried out during the Victorian era, making the abbey appear almost as it must have done 800 years ago. Sadly the adjacent buildings, like the cloister and kitchens, have not survived. It's not easy to find, but it's worth it, a gorgeous, unexpected spot on the road between Morpeth
