Prejmer Citadel

In Saxon times the Prejmer´s aim was to protect the rich prairie of Barsa. These large open spaces offered no security in the event of an invasion. Farmers in Prejmer and Harman then built this great fortress capable of accommodating the entire population in case of an extended attack. The citadel of Prejmer, or Tartlau in German, is an imposing whole, different from the rustic citadels of the region´s towns. A large arched walk from the XVIII century, crosses a first line of fortifications to reach a courtyard, and the second hallway leads to the centre of the whole church and the walls of defence.

The walls that protect this whole área are 12ft high and 4ft wide. Inside, there are 272 stalls attached to the walls, where the villagers used to leave their wealth. Each of the rooms belonged to a family who had food and jewellery there and the cattle was left in the central courtyard. The fort is open every day except Mondays. It is free but they ask for donation.
