Obligatory walk on the route to Alta Peru
This home in the Quebrada de Humahuaca between Maimará and Purmamarca, now a museum, it used to be an old post created by the Alvarez family Prado in the year 1772 and was a necessary step in the route connecting the Alto Peru with the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata. In the year 1810 it became the forefront Headquarters of the Independence Army and in the year 1913 it was the resting place of General Don Manuel Belgrano after the battles in Tucuman and Salta. In one of the rooms of this house stayed, among other heroes Martin Miguel de Guemes, Juan José Castelli, Antonio José Balcarce and Rondeau.
The adobe walls are whitewashed and there are roofs made of mud with cactus wood braces. Of the 19 rooms that has spread around 3 of the 4 courtyards, 15 of them ave valuable testimonies of the past. It also has 2 cells, a kitchen and a stone mill. In its extensive grounds is an agricultural experiment station where you can camp. You can visit Wednesday to Monday from 8:30 to 18 pm year round .
