For much of the history of England, Portsmouth has been Navy base so most of the tourist places are connected to the ocean. It's best to start the day visiting their Historic Dockyard, the admission includes a visit to the Naval Museum, several attractions related to shipbuilding, the 45 minute cruise around the harbor and a visit to the imposing HMS Warrior and HMS Victory, 2 historic vessels of the British Navy. The first was constructed in the year 1860 while the 2nd is the ship that Admiral Nelson defeated the Spanish troops in Trafalgar and which would sink.
